The President of the Emilia-Romagna Region wanted to send his greetings to the delegations and athletes who will invade Riccione in exactly three months‘ time
Only a land as strong and authentic as Emilia-Romagna, made up of traditions, values and people who know how to roll up their sleeves, could have recovered in such a short time from the devastating flood at the beginning of last May that scourged areas that today, less than two months after those dramatic days, are once again filled with tourists and holidaymakers, as every year, as if nothing had happened.
And it does not seem so, but the World ChessBoxing Championships, hosted in Riccione from 28 October to 2 November, also represent a piece in the extraordinary ability to know how to invent the future even when the present leaves little room for hope.
This is somewhat the meaning of the message that Stefano Bonaccini, President of the Emilia-Romagna Region since December 2014, wanted to send to the delegations and athletes who will soon peacefully ‘invade‘ the famous resort on the Adriatic coast to give life to the first edition of the World ChessBoxing Championships ever hosted outside of Asian countries.
It will be the first time in Italy and the first in Europe as well, as Bonaccini emphasises in his message, demonstrating the far-sightedness of wanting to believe in and bet on a new discipline, which is coming to the fore worldwide thanks to an increasing number of athletes won over by the strange combination of chess and boxing. Two sports at antipodes only for those who do not know how to look closely at a discipline that requires as much mental concentration as physical strength.
On the contrary, President Bonaccini takes a stance precisely towards those disciplines that are considered ‘second rate‘ only because they are not yet able to make the audience or win a place in the sun on television programmes, ‘because the passion of those who apply themselves to them, the athlete, the coach, the manager or the accompanying person, is the same‘.
Words that mean a lot to the FISP (Italian Chess Boxing Federation), whose organisational effort in recent months to create the prerequisites for an event destined to go down in the history of this discipline, is easy to understand.

Solo una terra forte e autentica come l’Emilia-Romagna, fatta di tradizioni, valori e gente che sa rimboccarsi le maniche, avrebbe potuto risollevarsi in così poco tempo dalla devastante alluvione che all’inizio dello scorso mese di maggio ha flagellato zone che oggi, a meno di due mesi di distanza da quei giorni drammatici, sono tornate a riempirsi di turisti e villeggianti, come ogni anno, come se niente fosse successo.
E non sembra, ma anche i Mondiali di ChessBoxing, ospitati a Riccione dal 28 ottobre al 2 novembre prossimi, rappresentano un tassello nella straordinaria capacità di saper inventare il futuro anche quando il presente lascia poco spazio alla speranza.
È un po’ questo, il senso del messaggio che Stefano Bonaccini, dal dicembre 2014 presidente della Regione Emilia-Romagna, ha voluto inviare alle delegazioni e agli atleti che a breve “invaderanno” pacificamente la celebre località della costiera romagnola per dare vita alla prima edizione dei Mondiali di ScacchiPugilato mai ospitata al di fuori dei Paesi asiatici.
Sarà la prima volta in Italia e la prima anche in Europa, come sottolinea Bonaccini nel suo messaggio dimostrando la lungimiranza di voler credere e scommettere su una disciplina nuova, che si affaccia alla ribalta mondiale grazie ad un numero crescente di atleti conquistati dallo strano binomio degli scacchi e della boxe. Due sport agli antipodi solo per chi non sa guardare con attenzione ad una disciplina che richiede tanta concentrazione mentale quanta forza fisica.
Anzi, il presidente Bonaccini prende posizione proprio verso le discipline considerate di “serie B” solo perché non ancora capaci di fare audience o di conquistarsi un posto al sole nelle programmazioni televisive, “perché la passione di chi vi si applica, l’atleta, l’allenatore, il dirigente o l’accompagnatore, è la stessa”.
Parole che significano tanto per la FISP (Federazione Italiana ScacchiPugilato), il cui sforzo organizzativo di questi mesi per creare i presupposti per un evento destinato a entrare nella storia di questa disciplina, è facilmente intuibile.
