A course for Chess Referee-Judge-Timekeeper is now underway: divided into four online evening events and one in-presence daytime event in Milan, plus an optional half-day in Riccione
Referee-judges are one of the many boasts of the Italian chess movement: during the last World Championship held in Turkey in 2022, Italy together with the host country had as many as two referees, as opposed to the single representative of all other countries. A great international reputation means a guarantee for event organisers all over the world.
For this reason, the opportunity offered to those who want to approach the speciality without necessarily entering the ring as an athlete is of particular importance: to become a referee, judge or timekeeper. Precisely the upcoming WCBO World Championships in Riccione (from 28 October to 2 November 2023), can become an opportunity to experience a world stage in the first person through the course just launched by the FISP, which is compulsory for all Italian referees who want to be part of the Riccione 2023 team.
Those who are already chess or ring sports referees, or even timekeepers, have a technical background that prepares them for the topics of the course, condensed into five meetings, four of which are shorter, online, and one in-person (in which the final assessment is also taken).
he course, organised by ASI, FISP and WCBO, is organised in cooperation with the Italian Chess Federation, whose referees will be entitled to a concessionary fee. The course will also be valid as a refresher course for SNaQ qualifications: members who pass it will be awarded an ASI-CONI National Diploma, a two-year technical card and registration on the ASI Technical Register (lasting two years: 2023-2024).
Course contents
- The tasks of timekeeper, referee and judge; teamwork of the referee trio or quatern;
- Knowledge of three documents: Technical Regulations, Light Regulations, GAC Operating Manual (Judges-Arbitrators-Timekeepers);
- Differences between FIDE and FISP-WCBO chess regulations;
- Differences between the IBA and FISP-WCBO boxing regulations;
- How to referee boxing and chess fights (including practice in the ring);
- How to judge boxing footage;
- Mimicry of the referee in the ring during chess and boxing shoots.
- In addition various other topics such as the role of the match doctor and case studies for referees and timekeepers.
The cost of the course is € 55 (€ 40 for FSI chess referees), while the additional cost for the National Diploma and the two-year ASI Technical Card is € 45.
As mentioned, in addition to the four online meetings, there will be an in-person one in Milan (M2 Famagosta area), plus one - again in-person - optional and/or remedial one.
The first meeting is scheduled for 11 September, from 20:30 to 23:00. The topics of the online meeting will be an outline of the FISP; the tasks of referee, judge and timekeeper in chess; the teamwork of the referee trio; and an introduction to the three FISP documents.
The next appointment, on 13 September (same time), will focus on the differences between FIDE and FISP-WCBO regulations; FISP Technical Regulations; How to referee boxing and chess matches.
Penultimate online meeting on 20 September (20:30-23:00) to address the topic of verdicts; GAC Operational Manual and the correct way to judge boxing footage.
Last effort on 22 September (also 20:30 - 23:00) for refinements: the Light regulation; mimicry of the referee trio; the role of the match doctor; the relationship between referees and athletes and coaches; Casuistry.
On 1 October (10 a.m. - 5.30 p.m., with a lunch break of approximately 70 minutes) in Milan, at the ‘Molon Labe‘ gym in Piazza Carrara 19, the only in-person meeting is scheduled. An opportunity to address topics such as the practice of getting in and out of the ring; refereeing practice in the ring; case studies for referees and timekeepers; gestures in the proclamation of the verdict in the ring and to close a question and answer session. The meeting concludes with an examination divided into written and practical parts.
The requirements for admission to the final examination include no more than 2 hours of absence, which can be made up with the ‘optional‘ (half) day in attendance (which becomes compulsory to be admitted), scheduled in Riccione on 28 October.
The course‘s teaching staff boasts prominent names in the field of boxing: Volfango Rizzi (WCBO International Referee, ASI Trainer, FISP President); Professor Piergiorgio Licini (FPI Benemerito Referee; Professor of Motor Sciences); Sergio Pagano (FIDE International Referee, FSI Master Candidate); Giuseppe Antonio Sotira (FISP Referee-Trainer; FISP Manager).

Al via un corso per Arbitro-Giudice-Cronometrista di scacchipugilato: suddiviso in quattro appuntamenti serali online e uno diurno in presenza a Milano, più una mezza giornata facoltativa a Riccione
Quello dei giudici arbitri è uno dei tanti vanti del movimento italiano dello scacchipugilato: nel corso dell’ultimo mondiale disputato in Turchia nel 2022, l’Italia insieme al Paese ospitante ha avuto ben due arbitri, al contrario del singolo rappresentante di tutti gli altri Paesi. Una grande reputazione internazionale che significa una garanzia per gli organizzatori di eventi in tutto il mondo.
Per questo, è di particolare importanza l’opportunità che viene offerta a chi vuole avvicinarsi alla specialità senza per forza salire sul ring come atleta: diventare arbitro, giudice o cronometrista. Proprio i prossimi Mondiali WCBO di Riccione (dal 28 ottobre al 2 novembre 2023), possono diventare l’occasione per vivere un’esperienza su un palcoscenico mondiale in prima persona attraverso il corso appena varato dalla FISP, obbligatorio per tutti gli arbitri italiani che vogliano far parte della compagine di Riccione 2023.
Chi è già un arbitro di scacchi o di uno sport da ring, o ancora un cronometrista, ha un bagaglio tecnico che predispone agli argomenti del corso, condensato in cinque incontri di cui quattro più brevi, online, ed uno in presenza (in cui si sostiene anche la valutazione finale).
Il corso, targato ASI, FISP e WCBO è organizzato in collaborazione con la Federazione Scacchistica Italiana, i cui arbitri avranno diritto ad una tariffa agevolata. Il corso sarà valido anche come corso di aggiornamento per le qualifiche SNaQ: ai tesserati che lo supereranno verrà rilasciato un Diploma Nazionale ASI-CONI, il tesserino tecnico biennale e l‘iscrizione all‘albo Tecnici ASI (di durata biennale: 2023-2024).
I contenuti del corso
- I compiti di cronometrista, arbitro e giudice; lavoro in equipe della terna o quaterna arbitrale;
- Conoscenza di tre documenti: Regolamento Tecnico, Regolamento Light, Manuale Operativo GAC (Giudici-Arbitri-Cronometristi);
- Differenze tra il regolamento scacchistico FIDE e FISP-WCBO;
- Differenze tra il regolamento pugilistico IBA e FISP-WCBO;
- Come arbitrare le riprese di pugilato e di scacchi (incluse prove pratiche nel ring);
- Come giudicare le riprese di pugilato;
- Mimica dell‘arbitro sul ring durante le riprese di scacchi e di pugilato.
- In aggiunta diversi altri temi quali il ruolo del medico di gara e casistiche per arbitri e cronometristi.
Il costo del corso è pari a € 55 (€ 40 per gli arbitri di scacchi FSI), mentre il costo aggiuntivo per il Diploma Nazionale e il Tesserino Tecnico biennale ASI è di € 45.
Come accennato, oltre ai quattro incontri online, ne è previsto uno in presenza a Milano (zona M2 Famagosta), più uno - sempre in presenza – facoltativo e/o di recupero.
Il primo appuntamento è in programma l’11 settembre, dalle ore 20:30 alle 23:00. Temi dell’incontro online cenni sulla FISP; i compiti di arbitro, giudice e cronometrista nello scacchipugilato; il lavoro d‘equipe della terna arbitrale; introduzione sui tre documenti FISP.
Il successivo appuntamento, il 13 settembre (stesso orario), verterà invece sulle differenze tra il regolamento FIDE e quello FISP-WCBO; Regolamento Tecnico FISP; Come arbitrare le riprese di pugilato e quelle di scacchi.
Penultimo appuntamento online il 20 settembre (20:30-23:00) per affrontare il tema dei verdetti; Manuale Operativo GAC e il modo corretto per giudicare le riprese di pugilato.
Ultimo sforzo il 22 settembre (sempre 20:30-23) per gli affinamenti: il regolamento Light; la mimica della terna arbitrale; il ruolo del medico di gara; la relazione tra arbitri e atleti e allenatori; Casistiche.
Il 1 ottobre (10 - 17:30, con circa 70 minuti di pausa pranzo) a Milano, presso la palestra “Molon Labe” di Piazza Carrara 19 è previsto l’unico incontro di persona. Un’occasione per affrontare temi come la pratica nel salire e scendere dal ring; la pratica di arbitraggio sul ring; casistiche per arbitri e cronometristi; gestualità nella proclamazione del verdetto sul ring e a chiudere una sessione di domande e risposte. L’incontro si conclude con una verifica divisa in parte scritta e pratica.
I requisiti per essere ammessi alla verifica finale prevedono non più di 2 ore di assenza, recuperabili con la (mezza) giornata in presenza “facoltativa” (che diventa obbligatoria per essere ammessi), prevista a Riccione il 28 ottobre.
