That day, the top management of the WCBO formalized Riccione‘s candidacy, which means bringing the Chessboxing World Championships to Italy for the first time

On February 10, 2023, the front pages of Italian newspapers went full page with the "frost" between Prime Minister Meloni and French President Macron. 

In Sanremo in the same days the evenings of the Sanremo Festival went crazy, as always dividing Italy between songs and controversies.
In the chess-boxing environment, February 10 is a date destined to enter the history books of this specialty. The WCBO (World Chessboxing Organization), the top world federation, based in Berlin, formalized the choice of Riccione as the venue for the fifth edition of the World Championships that day. For the Italian movement it is a victory that means crowning years of silent efforts to get the specialty out of the corner where the major sports relegate the disciplines defined as "niche", the one that counts for few athletes and at the moment has little media appeal. 

For those who practice them, these are the most difficult disciplines to get passionate about: if finding a boxing gym or taking the field chasing a ball is an easy task, finding the structures that among the various activities contemplate chessboxing still requires a greater effort today.
This is exactly the reason why last February 10, which arrived less than a week after the Italian Sergio Leveque‘s conquest of the heavyweight world champion title in Paris, the assignment of the World Cup on Italian territory immediately took on a double meaning : take the big leap, show yourself, promote yourself, gain space in the media, initially perhaps driven by the curiosity of an unusual "double" discipline, but so fascinating due to the physical and mental effort required of the athletes, that you can hope to arrive - one day – to the honors of live television.
The WCBO tournament commission, called to analyze the various candidates, was convinced by the proposal presented by the FISP, which was able to count from the outset on the support of the Emilia-Romagna Region, happy to bet and "baptize" a discipline that is still unknown to most, together with the Municipality of Riccione - which has made the "Play Hall" in Viale Carpi available - and the hotel organization of "Promohotels Riccione" which will take care of the hospitality of the delegations arriving from all over the world.
"We are proud and enthusiastic to host this sporting event, extremely original, spectacular and capable of producing a great media impact - commented Simone Imola, councilor for sport of the Emilian municipality - Riccione has always been a place where new things happen . 

Chess-boxing, which has been taking root in the world for some time now, brings a great deal of novelty as a dowry".
Furthermore, the Italian event also falls on the twentieth anniversary of the birth of the discipline, which was shown to the world for the first time in 2003 on a historic evening in Berlin, and also twenty years after the first World Championship hosted in Amsterdam , the one who graduated world champion Iepe Rubingh, the Dutch artist who created Chessboxing starting from a graphic novel by Enki Bilal.

Quel giorno, i vertici del WCBO ufficializzano la candidatura di Riccione, che significa portare per la prima volta in Italia i Mondiali di Chessboxing

Il 10 febbraio 2023, le prime pagine dei quotidiani italiani uscivano a piena pagina con il “gelo” tra la premier Meloni e il presidente francese Macron. 

A Sanremo negli stessi giorni impazzavano le serate del Festival di Sanremo, come sempre dividendo l’Italia fra canzoni e polemiche.
Nell’ambiente dello scacchipugilato, il 10 febbraio è una data destinata ad entrare nei libri di storia di questa specialità. Il WCBO (World Chessboxing Organisation), la massima federazione mondiale, con sede a Berlino, quel giorno ufficializza la scelta di Riccione come sede per la quinta edizioni dei Mondiali.

Per il movimento italiano è una vittoria che significa coronare anni di sforzi silenziosi per far uscire la specialità dall’angolo dove gli sport maggiori relegano le discipline definite di “nicchia”, quella che contano pochi atleti e al momento hanno scarso appeal mediatico.

Per chi le pratica, si tratta delle discipline più difficili a cui appassionarsi: se trovare una palestra di boxe o scendere in campo inseguendo un pallone è impresa facile, scovare le strutture che fra le varie attività contemplino lo scacchiboxe richiede ancora oggi uno sforzo maggiore.
È esattamente questo il motivo per cui il 10 febbraio scorso, arrivata meno di una settimana dopo dalla conquista del titolo di campione del mondo dei massimi dell’italiano Sergio Leveque a Parigi, l’assegnazione dei Mondiali sul territorio italiano ha assunto immediatamente un significato doppio: fare il grande salto, mostrarsi, promuoversi, guadagnare spazio sui mezzi di comunicazione, inizialmente forse spinti dalla curiosità di un’insolita disciplina “doppia”, ma talmente affascinante per lo sforzo fisico e mentale richiesto agli atleti, da poter sperare di arrivare – un giorno – agli onori delle dirette televisive.
A convincere la commissione tornei del WCBO, chiamata ad analizzare le diverse candidature, la proposta presentata dalla FISP, che ha potuto contare fin dall’inizio sul supporto della Regione Emilia-Romagna, ben contenta di scommettere e tenere “a battesimo” una disciplina ancora sconosciuta ai più, insieme al Comune di Riccione – che ha messo a disposizione il “Play Hall” di Viale Carpi - e all’organizzazione alberghiera della “Promohotels Riccione” che si occuperà dell’ospitalità delle delegazioni in arrivo da tutto il mondo. 

“Siamo orgogliosi ed entusiasti di ospitare questo evento sportivo, estremamente originale, spettacolare e in grado di produrre un grande impatto mediatico – aveva commentato a caldo Simone Imola, assessore allo Sport del Comune emiliano - Riccione è da sempre un luogo in cui succedono cose nuove.

Lo scacchipugilato, che pure si sta radicando ormai da tempo nel mondo, porta in dote una grande carica di novità”.
L’evento italiano, in più, cade anche nel ventesimo anniversario della nascita della disciplina, che si è mostrata al mondo per la prima volta nel 2003 in una storica serata a Berlino, e vent’anni anche dal primo Campionato del Mondo ospitato ad Amsterdam, quello che laureò campione del mondo Iepe Rubingh, l’artista olandese che ha ideato il Chessboxing partendo da una graphic novel di Enki Bilal.
