Matt Thomas, the legend of Chessboxing, will be in Riccione for the World Cup

Sportsman, philanthropist, former Team USA captain, serial traveler: the life of a Pennsylvania boy changed radically when he met chessboxing
The news is confirmed: Matt Thomas, the official "voice" of world Chessboxing, will be in Riccione as a guest of honor and to comment live on the fifth edition of the World Championships, scheduled from 28 October to 2 November next.
Born in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, Matt has long lived in Atlanta, Georgia, where he founded and directed the non-profit organization "Brawl for a Cause", whose goal is to raise and donate as much money as possible to any cause that is worth fighting for through charity sporting events.
Former captain of Team USA at the 2018 Chessboxing World Championships, avid fan of Harry Potter and Michael Crichton‘s books, Thomas has always combined his passion for the main sport of hand-to-hand combat with that of traveling and seeing the world up close: first By going to middle school he had already visited 28 of the 50 American states, and by the time he graduated he had already accumulated seven moves to as many cities.
“I remember the day I first heard the word philanthropy. It was the same day that I learned the word entrepreneur. I was in fourth grade and we were talking about Andrew Carnegie. When I got home, I asked my parents if the steel industrialist capable of financing the birth of dozens of universities, libraries and museums was the only one or if other businessmen had also used the billions of dollars earned in their business to help others. Since then, I have associated entrepreneurship with philanthropy."
Thomas discovers the existence of Chessboxing by accident, while he was recovering from shoulder surgery following an injury. “Chessboxing found me at my most vulnerable moment. It felt like my destiny."
But if he had no problems in the ring, Matt had learned chess as a child, playing less and less as he got older. Convinced that he had to improve in order to compete on the world stage, he contacted Carlos Perdomo, the founder of "Chess Atlanta", who allowed him to train with his students. “The first day I was beaten up by children between 8 and 12 years old. They slaughtered me so relentlessly that I cried on my way home. But I didn‘t give up: I came back the next day, and the day after that."
2019 Chessboxing World Champion, Matt Thomas called chessboxing a perfect match: “Controlling the center of the chessboard is like controlling the center of the ring. Every piece you move around the board is like a different punch from the box - jabs, uppercuts, uppercuts - and you can hurt your opponent in the same way."

La notizia è confermata: Matt Thomas, la “voce” ufficiale del Chessboxing mondiale, sarà a Riccione come ospite d’onore e per commentare in diretta la quinta edizione dei Campionati del Mondo, in programma dal 28 ottobre al 2 novembre prossimi.
Nato a Phoenixville, in Pennsylvania, Matt vive da tempo ad Atlanta, in Georgia, dove ha fondato e diretto l’organizzazione no-profit “Brawl for a Cause”, il cui obiettivo è di raccogliere e donare quanto più denaro possibile ad ogni causa per cui valga la pena lottare attraverso eventi sportivi di beneficenza.
Ex capitano del Team USA ai mondiali 2018 di Chessboxing, fan sfegatato di Harry Potter e dei libri di Michael Crichton, Thomas unisce da sempre la passione per lo sport principe del combattimento corpo a corpo a quella di viaggiare e vedere da vicino il mondo: prima di andare alle medie aveva già visitato 28 dei 50 Stati americani, e prima di diplomarsi aveva già accumulato sette traslochi in altrettante città.
“Ricordo il giorno in cui ho sentito per la prima volta la parola filantropia. È stato lo stesso giorno in cui ho imparato la parola imprenditore. Ero in quarta elementare e stavamo parlando di Andrew Carnegie. Quando sono tornato a casa, ho chiesto ai miei genitori se l’industriale dell’acciaio capace di finanziare la nascita di decine di università, biblioteche e musei fosse l’unico o se anche altri uomini d‘affari avessero utilizzato i miliardi di dollari guadagnati nei loro business per aiutare il prossimo. Da quel momento, ho associato l‘imprenditorialità alla filantropia”.
Thomas scopre l’esistenza del Chessboxing per caso, mentre si stava riprendendo da un intervento chirurgico alla spalla dopo un un infortunio. “Lo scacchiboxe mi ha trovato nel momento più vulnerabile. Sembrava il mio destino”.
Ma se sul ring non aveva problemi di sorta, Matt aveva imparato gli scacchi da bambino, giocando sempre più di rado mentre cresceva. Convinto di dover migliorare per poter competere sulla scena mondiale ha contattato Carlos Perdomo, il fondatore di “Chess Atlanta”, che gli ha permesso di allenarsi con i suoi studenti. “Il primo giorno sono stato malmenato da bambini tra gli 8 e 12 anni. Mi hanno massacrato in modo così implacabile che tornando verso casa mi scendevano le lacrime. Ma non ho mollato: sono tornato il giorno successivo, e quello dopo ancora”.
Campione del Mondo di Chessboxing 2019, Matt Thomas ha definito lo scacchipugilato un abbinamento perfetto: “Controllare il centro della scacchiera è come controllare il centro del ring. Ogni pezzo che muovi sulla scacchiera è come un colpo diverso della box - jab, montanti, uppercut -e puoi fare male all’avversario allo stesso modo”.
