Milanese, 50 years old, he will lead the Italian delegation at the first chessboxing World Championships hosted in Italy. A responsibility he feels, but with the knowledge that he has at his disposal a team with great potential
Exactly the responsibility felt by Fernando Frattesi, known to everyone as "Freddy," the coach who will lead the Azzurri at the Chessboxing World Championships in Riccione. From Milan, Italy, 50 years old, Freddy is a boxer who a few years ago chose to cross over to the other side of the fence by founding the "Molon Labe Boxing Club" gym at 19 Piazza Carrara in Milan, which on this occasion became the headquarters of the Azzurri chessboxing expedition.
A little bit of responsibility I feel, I admit. But it is a challenge that stimulates me and I feel in the air a lot of desire to do well.
Did you expect to be called by Fisp to lead the Azzurra team?
We had talked about it, I am one of the "senior" coaches and I have already prepared several athletes to face international rings. But certainly when the official appointment as CT of the expedition came a couple of shivers down my spine.
First impressions of the team?
We have been working together since before the summer, some I already knew, others I had only heard of because they are names circulating in the environment.
How are you preparing them?
In order to get to know each other better, we held our first collegiate training on July 16, and the next one is scheduled for October 1: it will be the finishing one, the last one before stepping into the ring at the World Championships. It is a novel mechanism, never done before, but it is part of a work set up so that we can continue after the Worlds.
What are the biggest difficulties you are working on?
We insist a lot on the break between boxing and chess: I have studied exercises with very high physical stress followed by the first chess move, the one on which it is easiest to make a mistake and which can often cost the match if you do not immediately find the ability to get your head out of the boxing to lower yourself among the chess pieces.
And is the team ready?
We are focusing on strategies to put into practice in the ring, with training programs brushed on each one: some need to improve the chess part, some need to refine their boxing technique. Although we don‘t see each other often due to distance issues I know they are giving their all, I also understand this from the sacrifices they make to be there every time: it means sacrificing time and energy. That is why I have a lot of respect for all of them, however things go.
How many of you will be there to defend the Azzurri colors?
The convocations have not yet been made, but I think we are talking about a dozen chessboxers, a record number for Italy but more than due, since the World Championships are being held right at home.
Years ago, Volfango Rizzi, the organizer of the Mondiali, told me about it, and I was immediately fascinated: I found the idea of bringing together two such different universes absolutely brilliant.
Do you think the Riccione World Championships will take the veil off a discipline that many people still don‘t know about?
It may be the spark, although I see a steady growth of interest for several years now.
Any final recommendations you will make to the team?
I will try to motivate them, remembering that this is a chance for each of them to enter the history books of this discipline. But the last piece of advice will be and always just one: have fun guys.

Milanese, 50 anni, sarà lui a guidare la delegazione Azzurra ai primi Mondiali di chessboxing ospitati in Italia. Una responsabilità che avverte, ma con la consapevolezza di avere a disposizione una squadra dal grande potenziale
Non c’è sport al mondo in cui, si vinca o si perda, le responsabilità non passino attraverso il CT, l’allenatore, si diceva un tempo. Colui da cui dipendono le scelte, le tattiche e le strategie, un ruolo “parafulmine”, complicato e delicato insieme, di quelli che possono stroncare o consacrare carriere.
Esattamente la responsabilità che si sente addosso Fernando Frattesi, per tutti “Freddy”, l’allenatore che guiderà gli Azzurri ai Mondiali di Chessboxing di Riccione. Milanese, 50 anni, Freddy è un pugile che qualche anno fa ha scelto di passare dall’altra parte della barricata fondando la palestra “Molon Labe Boxing Club” di piazza Carrara 19, a Milano, per l’occasione diventata il quartier generale della spedizione Azzurra di scacchipugilato.
Come va Freddy, sei teso? Un po’ di responsabilità la sento, lo ammetto. Ma è una sfida che mi stimola e sento nell’aria tanta voglia di far bene.
Ti aspettavi di essere chiamato dalla Fisp alla guida della squadra Azzurra? Ne avevamo parlato, sono uno dei tecnici più “anziani” e ho già preparato diversi atleti per affrontare ring internazionali. Ma certo quando è arrivata la nomina ufficiale di CT della spedizione un paio di brividi lungo la schiena li ho avuti.
Le prime impressioni sulla squadra? Lavoriamo insieme da prima dell’estate, qualcuno lo conoscevo già, altri li avevo solo sentiti nominare perché sono nomi che circolano nell’ambiente.
Come li stai preparando? Per conoscerci meglio abbiamo organizzato il primo allenamento collegiale il 16 luglio scorso e il prossimo è in programma il 1° ottobre: sarà quello di rifinitura, l’ultimo prima di salire sul ring dei Mondiali. È un meccanismo inedito, mai fatto prima, ma fa parte di un lavoro impostato in modo da poter proseguire anche dopo i Mondiali.
Quali sono le difficoltà maggiori su cui lavorate? Insistiamo molto sul momento di stacco fra pugilato e scacchi: ho studiato degli esercizi dallo stress fisico molto elevato seguiti dalla prima mossa scacchiera, quella su cui è più facile sbagliare e che spesso può costare l’incontro se non si trova subito la capacità di uscire con la testa dalla boxe per calarsi fra i pezzi degli scacchi.
E la squadra è pronta? Ci stiamo concentrando sulle strategie da metterei un pratica sul ring, con programmi di allenamento pennellati su ognuno: c’è chi ha bisogno di migliorare la parte dedicata agli scacchi, chi deve rifinire la tecnica pugilistica. Anche se non ci vediamo spesso per questioni di distanze so che stanno dando il massimo, lo capisco anche dai sacrifici che fanno per esserci ogni volta: significa immolare tempo ed energie. Per questo ho molto rispetto per tutti loro, comunque vadano le cose.
Quanti sarete a difendere i colori Azzurri? Le convocazioni non sono ancora state fatte, ma credo si parli di una decina di chessboxer, un numero record per l’Italia ma più che doveroso, visto che i Mondiali si disputano proprio in casa nostra.
Ma tu quando hai incontrato lo scacchipugilato? Anni fa, me ne ha parlato Volfango Rizzi, l’organizzatore dei Mondiali, e ne sono rimasto immediatamente affascinato: ho trovato assolutamente geniale l’idea di mettere insieme due universi così diversi.
Credi che i Mondiali di Riccione toglieranno il velo ad una disciplina che ancora in molti non conoscono? Può essere la scintilla, anche se vedo una crescita di interesse costante da diversi anni.
Le ultime raccomandazioni che farai alla squadra? Cercherò di motivarli, ricordando che è l’occasione per ognuno di loro di entrare nei libri di storia di questa disciplina. Ma l’ultimo consiglio sarà e sempre e soltanto uno: divertitevi ragazzi.
