Having established that the beauty of chess-pugilism lies precisely in its strangeness, forcing boxers oozing with adrenaline to sit at a table to figure out whether or not it is time to castle, it remained to define everything else, the part that turns the discipline desired by Iepe Rubingh into a real show.
This is no simple matter: apart from boxing, which has its spectacularity concentrated on the 6 square meters of the ring, it remained to figure out how to enhance even the chess part, which is definitely more static.
The result, namely what will be seen at Riccione‘s "Play Hall," the stage for the first World Championship of the specialty snatched from Asian countries to bring it directly to the Romagna Riviera, is the fruit of a project by Ivan Gatti and his team.
Gatti‘s is a company based in the province of Potenza, in the Basilicata region of Italy, with a unique peculiarity: it is an example of the tough and courageous choice at the same time of those who have remained in the south but work so well that they are increasingly in demand in the north. So much for those who think the opposite always applies.
This is no coincidence: the "Ivan Gatti Productions" deals with big events, but with the turnkey formula: set designers, choreographers, graphic designers, specialists in special effects, sound and light engineering, work closely together thinking about everything that is enclosed under the simple definition of "event": from the scenic part, starting with sound and lights, to graphics and set-ups, even reaching the smallest details of the tables for the juries.
Ivan, confess: what did you study for Riccione?
We started with an idea: to broaden the concept of chessboxing by shifting the center of gravity away from the ring, the one place where each match took place by concentrating boxing and chess.
Interesting: can you reveal more?
Basically, the ring is intended to accommodate only the canonically boxing part. When it‘s chess‘ turn, we thought of setting up a catwalk that leads to another stage on which everything for the other specialty is arranged.
Like in big concerts, where a long peninsula brings the performer closer to the audience.
That‘s right, that‘s the principle. In addition to making the chess part more spectacular with the presence of lights, backdrops and a ledwall on which to project the moves commented by the referees, you get the double advantage of being able to rearrange the part that remains in the dark from time to time. This is because the athletes are expected to be followed in their path by a play of lights that gradually fades as they pass. Besides, let‘s face it: it was untelevised to see the referees set up the chess table in the ring each time.
A very "American" view.
Well, like it or not, we all grew up with images of Apollo Creed coming to the ring in "Rocky 2" accompanied by choreography, dancers, bangs, flashes and special effects. In the United States, boxing is experienced this way, in a more energetic way.For Riccione, with a reinterpretation in an Italian key, more moderate, we thought it was the right idea to give an extra touch of spectacle, showing what Italians are capable of doing when they really believe in something.
This is not the first time you have been called upon to create the side dish at a chessboxing event.
No, that‘s right, in June last year we were in charge of the International Chessboxing Show in Vigevano, complete with a historical procession.
Just between us: do you like the discipline?
Very much, it is fascinating because it brings together two specialties one at the antithesis of the other, and I am convinced it has enormous room for growth.
Have you ever tried it?
No, but only because of lack of time. I have a job that takes me around Italy all the time and does not allow me to cultivate passions. In conjunction with the World Championships in Riccione, for example, we will follow in Sardinia a kind of world cup of dance sports that will see the 16 best couples compete. The next day I will take a plane to finally attend the World Chess World Cup, which we have been working on for months with the organization.

Assodato che il bello dello scacchipugilato sta proprio nella sua stranezza, costringendo boxeur che trasudano adrenalina a sedersi ad un tavolo per capire se è il momento o meno di arroccare, restava da definire tutto il resto, la parte che trasformi la disciplina voluta da Iepe Rubingh in uno spettacolo vero e proprio.
Non è cosa semplice: a parte il pugilato, che ha la sua spettacolarità concentrata sui 6 metri quadrati del ring, restava da capire come esaltare anche la parte scacchistica, decisamente più statica.
Il risultato, ovvero quel che si vedrà al “Play Hall” di Riccione, palcoscenico del primo Mondiale della specialità strappato ai paesi asiatici per portarlo direttamente sulla Riviera Romagnola, è il frutto di un progetto di Ivan Gatti e del suo team.
Quella di Gatti è un’azienda con sede in provincia di Potenza, in Basilicata, dalla particolarità unica: è un esempio della scelta tosta e coraggiosa insieme di chi è rimasto al sud, ma lavora così bene da essere sempre più richiesto al nord. Alla faccia di chi pensa valga sempre il contrario.
Non è un caso: la “Ivan Gatti Produzioni” si occupa di grandi eventi, ma con la formula “chiavi in mano”: scenografi, coreografi, grafici, specialisti in effetti speciali, sound e light engineering, lavorano a stretto contatto pensando a tutto quello che è racchiuso sotto la semplice definizione di “evento”: dalla parte scenografica, a cominciare da audio e luci, alla grafica e gli allestimenti, arrivando perfino ai minimi dettagli dei tavoli per le giurie.
Ivan, confessa: cos’hai studiato per Riccione?
Siamo partiti da un’idea: allargare il concetto di chessboxing spostando il baricentro dal ring, l’unico punto in cui svolgeva ogni incontro concentrando boxe e scacchi.
Interessante: puoi rivelare qualcosa di più?
In pratica, il ring è destinato ad ospitare esclusivamente la parte canonicamente dedicata alla boxe. Quando è il turno degli scacchi, abbiamo pensato di allestire una passerella che porta ad un altro palco su cui è sistemato tutto ciò che serve per l’altra specialità.
Come nei grandi concerti, dove una lunga penisola avvicina l’artista al pubblico.
Esatto, il principio è quello. Oltre a rendere più spettacolare la parte scacchistica con la presenza di luci, fondali e un ledwall su cui proiettare le mosse commentate dagli arbitri, si ottiene il doppio vantaggio di poter risistemare la parte che resta di volta in volta all’oscuro. Questo perché è previsto che gli atleti siano seguiti nel loro percorso da un gioco di luci che si spegne gradualmente al loro passaggio. E poi diciamolo: era poco televisivo vedere gli arbitri montare ogni volta il tavolino per gli scacchi sul ring.
Una visione molto “americana”.
Beh, volenti o nolenti siamo cresciuti tutti con le immagini di Apollo Creed che in “Rocky 2” arriva sul ring accompagnato da coreografie, ballerine, botti, lampi ed effetti speciali. Negli Stati Uniti la boxe è vissuta così, in modo più energico. Per Riccione, con una rilettura in chiave italiana, più moderata, abbiamo pensato che fosse l’idea giusta per dare un tocco di spettacolo in più, mostrando quello che gli italiani sono in grado di fare quando credono davvero in qualcosa.
Non è la prima volta che sei chiamato a creare il contorno ad un evento di scacchipugilato.
No, è vero, nel giugno dello scorso anno ci siamo occupati dell’International Chessboxing Show di Vigevano, con tanto di corteo storico.
Detto fra noi: la disciplina ti piace?
Molto, è affascinante perché mette insieme due specialità una all’antitesi dell’altra, e sono convinto che abbia enormi margini di crescita.
Hai mai provato?
No, ma solo per mancanza di tempo. Faccio un lavoro che mi porta di continuo in giro per l’Italia e non permette di coltivare passioni. In concomitanza con i Mondiali di Riccione, ad esempio, seguiremo in Sardegna una sorta di coppa del mondo della danza sportiva che vedranno sfidarsi le 16 migliori coppie. Il giorno dopo prenderò l’aereo per assistere finalmente al Mondiale di scacchipugilato, a cui lavoriamo da mesi con l’organizzazione.
